What is the world’s largest reptile?

The world’s largest living reptile is the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). Large males can grow to more than 6 meters long and weigh over 1,000 kilograms, making the species considerably bigger than any lizard or snake. Saltwater crocodiles live in coastal waters, estuaries and rivers across parts of South and Southeast Asia, and northern Australia, where they hunt fish, birds and large mammals.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is often mentioned in this context, but it is the world’s largest lizard, not the largest reptile overall – it can grow up to about 3 meters long and weigh over 70 kilograms, which is far smaller than a large saltwater crocodile. Komodo dragons live mainly on a few islands in Indonesia, including Komodo, and are capable of taking down large prey such as water buffalo.
