What is the oldest cinema in Finland?

Finland’s oldest cinema is Maxim, located on Kluuvikatu in the centre of Helsinki. It has operated as a cinema continuously since 1909, which makes it the oldest cinema in Finland that is still in operation.

History of Maxim

The cinema opened in 1909 under the name Olympia. In 1923 it was renamed Piccadilly, and since 1931 it has been known as Maxim.

The current building

The current building on Kluuvikatu was completed in 1974. The theatre’s smaller auditorium, Maxim 2, has carefully preserved the interior of the old Maxim, with its gilded reliefs and crystal chandeliers.

The cinema today

Maxim is now part of the Finnkino chain and shows both new films and classics. More than a hundred years of continuous operation at the same address make it a unique part of Finnish film history.
