What is World Rainforest Day?

World Rainforest Day, also known as International Rainforest Day, is a day celebrated annually on June 22, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of rainforests and promoting their protection. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the ecological, economic and cultural value of rainforests and to encourage people and communities to act to preserve them.

Why are rainforests important?

Rainforests are vital for many reasons. They cover only about 6% of the earth’s surface, but more than half of the world’s plant and animal species live in them. Rainforests also act as significant carbon sinks that help combat climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In addition, they regulate global climate conditions and the water cycle.

Rainforest Threats

Unfortunately, rainforests face many threats such as deforestation, illegal logging, agricultural expansion and infrastructure projects. As a result of these activities, rainforests are shrinking at an alarming rate, leading to the extinction of species, acceleration of climate change, and deterioration of the living conditions of local communities.

How can we protect the rainforest?

Rainforest protection requires a wide range of actions and cooperation between different parties. Here are some ways we can promote the preservation of rainforests:

  • Supporting sustainable development: Choose products that are sustainably produced and do not contribute to deforestation.
  • Political advocacy: Support policies and legislation that protect rainforests and promote sustainable forest management.
  • Environmental education: Spread information about the importance of rainforests and the need to protect them.
  • Financial support: Donate to organizations working to protect rainforests.
