What trade did Handel originally study?
Georg Friedrich Handel, one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, is especially known for his oratorios and operas. However, before he became a famous composer, he studied a completely different field. Handel was born in 1685 in Halle an der Saale, Germany, to Georg Händel, a distinguished surgeon and barber. The father hoped that his son would follow in his footsteps and become a lawyer.
Handel’s early years and studies
Handel showed a great interest in music early on, but his father did not encourage him in this direction at first. In accordance with his father’s wishes, Handel began studying law at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1702. He only studied law for a short time, as his passion for music was too strong to ignore.
Transition to music
Although Handel studied law, he never abandoned music. He continued practicing music and composing alongside his studies. In the end, he decided to follow his heart and devote himself fully to music. In 1703 he moved to Hamburg, where he began his career as an opera composer and musician.
Handel’s importance to music
Handel’s decision to switch to music turned out to be the right one. He became one of the most prominent composers of his time, and his works such as “Messiah” and “Water Music” are still popular and performed around the world. His contribution to Baroque music is immeasurable, and his influence is still felt in today’s music.
