Suomenlinna is located in front of Helsinki and is easily accessible by ferry.<\/p>\n<h2>What makes Suomenlinna special?<\/p>\n<p>Suomenlinna is unique in many ways. It was built in the 18th century and served as a defense fortress during the rule of Sweden, Russia and Finland. The fortress consists of several islands connected to each other by means of bridges and tunnels. There are also several museums, cafes and restaurants in the area, which offer visitors versatile experiences.<\/p>\n<h2>The history of Suomenlinna<\/p>\n<p>The construction of Suomenlinna started in 1748, when Finland was part of Sweden. The original name of the fortress was Sveaborg, and its purpose was to protect Sweden&#8217;s eastern border from the Russian threat. In 1808, during the Finnish war, the fortress surrendered to the Russians and it came under Russian control. After Finland became independent in 1917, the fortress was named Suomenlinna.<\/p>\n<h2>Suomenlinna attractions<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to see and experience in Suomenlinna. Here are some highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Suomenlinna Church:<\/b> Originally an Orthodox church, which was converted to Lutheran after Finland gained independence.<\/li>\n<li><b>Suomenlinna museum:<\/b> A museum that presents the history and life of the fortress in its different eras.<\/li>\n<li><b>Vesikko submarine:<\/b> A World War II submarine that is open to the public.<\/li>\n<li><b>Kustaanmiekka:<\/b> An area located at the southern tip of the fortress, with a wonderful view of the sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Practical information for visitors<\/p>\n<p>Suomenlinna is open all year round, but the summer season is the most popular time to visit. Ferries to Suomenlinna leave from Helsinki&#8217;s Kauppatori, and the trip takes about 15-20 minutes.
