It borders the Central African Republic in the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the east, Angola and the Atlantic Ocean in the south and west, and Gabon in the northwest. The capital of the Republic of Congo is Brazzaville, and the official language of the country is French.<\/p>\n<h2>EU enlargement<\/h2>\n<p>The European Union has expanded several times since its foundation, but the expansion has always concerned European countries. Becoming a member of the EU requires meeting certain criteria, such as respecting the principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as the existence of a functioning market economy.
