The European Union was founded in 1993 with the aim of promoting peace, stability and economic cooperation in Europe.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>EU member states are committed to complying with common rules and values, such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The countries belonging to the Union cooperate in many different areas, such as trade, environmental protection and security.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has its own legislation, budget and institutions, such as the European Parliament and the European Commission. The Union makes decisions by mutual agreement of the member countries, and the member states can benefit from many joint programs and funding.<\/p>\n<p>So the EU is not a country, but a federal state consisting of independent European countries.
