Who was the first president of Finland?

The first president of Finland was Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg. He served as the President of the Republic of Finland in 1919–1925. Ståhlberg’s election as president took place after Finland’s independence, when the country had moved to a republican form of government.

Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg’s background

Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg was born on January 28, 1865 in Suomussalmi. He was trained as a lawyer and, before his presidency, worked as a professor of administrative law at the University of Helsinki, as well as in several important civil service and political positions. Ståhlberg was also one of the central figures in the development of the Finnish constitution and form of government.

Presidential term

Ståhlberg was elected president on July 25, 1919. During his presidency, Finland was a young and independent country that faced many challenges, such as reconstruction after the civil war and establishing its international status. During Ståhlberg’s period, many basic institutions were also created, which are still part of the Finnish state system.

Significant achievements

  • Strengthening the Constitution: Ståhlberg was a key figure in the creation of Finland’s constitution and form of government. Under his leadership, Finland got a modern and democratic constitution.
  • Reconstruction: After the civil war, Ståhlberg’s administration focused on rebuilding the country and restoring social integrity.
