What is XR?

XR, i.e. Extended Reality, is an umbrella term that refers to extended reality. It covers several technologies that connect the physical and digital worlds. XR includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). These technologies allow users to experience and interact with their environment in a whole new way.

What are VR, AR and MR?

To better understand what XR means, it is important to look at its different aspects:

  • Virtual Reality (VR): VR creates a completely artificial environment in which the user can move and interact. This is usually achieved by using VR glasses that cover the user’s field of vision and provide a 360-degree view of the virtual world. Examples of VR devices are Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
  • Augmented reality (AR): AR adds digital elements to the view of the real world. This can happen, for example, with a smartphone or AR glasses that display digital objects or information in the user’s field of vision. A well-known example of AR technology is the Pokémon GO game.
  • Mixed Reality (MR): MR combines elements from both VR and AR. It enables digital objects and real world elements to interact in real time. For example, MR devices such as Microsoft HoloLens can display holograms that the user can see and manipulate in their physical environment.

Applications of XR

XR technologies have a wide range of applications in different fields:

  1. Education: XR can provide immersive learning experiences such as virtual lab experiments or re-creations of historical events.
  2. Health care: Doctors can use VR to practice surgical procedures or AR to display patient information during surgery.
  3. Entertainment: Games and movies can take advantage of XR technologies to provide more immersive and interactive experiences.
  4. Industry: XR can help with design, maintenance and training, for example by showing the internal structures of machines or guiding workers in complex tasks.
  5. Travel: Virtual tours and AR guides can enrich travel experiences and provide information about destinations in real time.

The future of XR

XR technologies are developing rapidly and are expected to change many aspects of life in the future. Improved equipment, such as lighter and more comfortable VR and AR glasses, as well as advanced software that enables more realistic and interactive experiences, will likely increase the popularity and use of XR.
