What is underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating is a heating system where heat is produced through the floor. This heating method has become more common especially in new construction and renovation projects because of the comfort and energy efficiency it offers. Underfloor heating can be implemented either as a water circulation or electric system, and both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

How does underfloor heating work?

In underfloor heating, the heat is transferred through the floor into the room air, which creates an even and pleasant temperature in the entire space. This differs from traditional radiator heating systems, where the heat is concentrated near the radiator and spreads from it into the room.

Water circulation floor heating

In water circulation floor heating, warm water circulates in the pipes under the floor. This system is particularly energy efficient because it can utilize different heat sources, such as district heating, geothermal heat or solar energy. Water circulation floor heating is well suited for large spaces and is a long-lasting solution.

Electric floor heating

Electrical floor heating uses electric cables or mats that are installed under the floor. This system is easy and quick to install, and is especially suitable for smaller spaces such as bathrooms and hallways. Electric underfloor heating is also a good choice for renovation projects where installing a water circulation system would be too laborious.

Advantages of underfloor heating

  • Comfort: Underfloor heating provides an even and pleasant temperature throughout the room.
  • Energy efficiency: Underfloor heating can be more energy efficient than traditional heating systems, especially with water circulation.
  • Aesthetics: Underfloor heating does not require visible radiators, which gives more freedom for interior design.
  • Hygiene: Underfloor heating reduces the circulation of dust and allergens in the air, which improves indoor air quality.

Disadvantages of underfloor heating

  • Costs: Installation costs for underfloor heating can be higher than for traditional heating systems.
  • Complexity of installation: In particular, water circulation floor heating requires professional installation.
  • Maintenance: Although underfloor heating is usually maintenance-free, possible defects can be difficult to repair because they are located under the floor.

Summary

Underfloor heating is a modern and comfortable heating system that offers many advantages compared to traditional heating methods. It is especially popular in new construction and renovation sites where you want to invest in energy efficiency and living comfort. By choosing the right type of underfloor heating and taking care of its proper installation, you can enjoy pleasant and even heat for decades.
