What is NATO’s mission?

NATO, i.e. the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an international defense alliance that was founded in 1949. Its main task is to secure the security and stability of its member countries. NATO’s main tasks

NATO has several key tasks, which can be divided into the following categories:

  • Collective defense: The cornerstone of NATO is the principle of collective defense, which is enshrined in Article 5 of the agreement.   • Crisis management: NATO participates in international crisis management operations, which may include peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and conflict prevention. Examples of such operations are NATO’s role in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
  • Cooperation and partnerships: NATO cooperates closely with other countries and international organizations. This cooperation promotes security and stability in the wider region. NATO has partnership programs with, among others, the European Union, the United Nations and the African Union.
  • Promoting security: NATO strives to promote security and stability outside its member countries as well. This may include arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

NATO structure and decision-making

NATO’s decision-making is based on consensus, which means that all member countries agree on decisions. The most important decisions are made in the North Atlantic Council (NAC), which consists of the ambassadors of the member countries. The NAC meets regularly and may also meet at a higher level, such as at the level of defense ministers or heads of state.

NATO member countries

NATO currently has 30 member countries, located mainly in North America and Europe. The member countries undertake to defend each other and participate in the union’s activities. Membership in NATO is open to all European countries that meet certain political, economic and military criteria.

The future of NATO

NATO’s role and tasks are constantly changing according to the world political situation. New threats, such as cyber attacks and hybrid warfare, require adaptation and new strategies from NATO. The association also aims to strengthen its cooperation with other international actors and expand its partnerships.
