What is Agenda 2030?
Agenda 2030 is the United Nations (UN) sustainable development program that was adopted in September 2015. It contains 17 sustainable development goals (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs) and 169 sub-goals, which aim to guide global development towards a sustainable and just future by 2030. The 2030 Agenda is a universal plan of action that applies to all countries and all people, and its goals broadly cover social, economic and environmental aspects.
Agenda 2030 Goals
The 17 sustainable development goals of Agenda 2030 are:
- End poverty in all its forms everywhere
- End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
- Guarantee a healthy life and well-being for all ages
- Guarantee an open, equal and high-quality education for all and lifelong learning opportunities
- Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
- Guarantee water supply and sustainable use and sanitation for everyone
- Guarantee affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for everyone
- Promotes sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent jobs for all
- Build sustainable infrastructure, promote sustainable industry and support innovation
- Reduce inequality within and between countries
- Make cities and residential communities inclusive, safe, sustainable and resilient
- Ensures the sustainability of consumption and production methods
- Take urgent action to combat climate change and its effects
- To protect and sustainably use the seas and the resources offered by the seas
- Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of the earth’s ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, stop and reverse soil depletion and stop the loss of biodiversity
- Promote peaceful and inclusive societies to achieve sustainable development, guarantee access to justice for all and build efficient, responsible and inclusive institutions at all levels
- Strengthens means and revitalizes global partnership to promote sustainable development
Meaning of Agenda 2030
Agenda 2030 is significant because it offers a comprehensive and integrated approach to sustainable development. It recognizes that economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection are interconnected and that achieving sustainable development requires balancing these three dimensions. Agenda 2030 also emphasizes the importance of cooperation and partnerships, as achieving the goals of sustainable development requires the participation and contribution of all stakeholders – governments, the private sector, civil society and international organizations.
Finland’s role in Agenda 2030
Finland is committed to implementing the goals of Agenda 2030 both nationally and internationally. The Finnish Sustainable Development Committee coordinates and monitors the implementation of Agenda 2030 in Finland. In addition, Finland supports the achievement of sustainable development goals in developing countries through development cooperation.
