What are the terms of termination of the electricity contract?

Terms of termination of an electricity contract may vary depending on the type of contract and the electricity company. In general, electricity contracts can be divided into two main types: open-ended contracts and fixed-term contracts. The termination conditions for these contract types are discussed in more detail below.

Electricity contract valid for the time being

An electricity contract valid for the time being is valid until the customer or the electricity company terminates it. The terms of termination of such a contract are usually more flexible than those of a fixed-term contract. The general terms of termination are as follows:

  • Termination period: The customer can terminate an electricity contract that is valid for an indefinite period, usually with a notice period of 14 days. This means that the contract ends 14 days after the notice of termination is given.
  • Termination method: Termination can be done in writing, by e-mail or through the electricity company’s online service. In some cases, termination can also be done by phone.
  • The power company’s right to terminate: The power company can also terminate a contract valid for an indefinite period, but usually the company must give the customer at least one month’s notice.

Fixed electricity contract

A fixed-term electricity contract is valid for a pre-agreed period, for example one or two years. The terms of termination of such an agreement are usually stricter than those of an indefinite agreement. The general terms of termination are as follows:

  • Termination period: A fixed-term electricity contract cannot usually be terminated in the middle of the contract period without a special reason, such as moving to another address where the same electricity company cannot supply electricity.
  • Termination method: If termination is possible, it must be done in writing or in a manner specified by the electricity company.
  • Termination of the contract: The fixed-term contract ends automatically at the end of the contract period, unless the customer or the electricity company agrees on an extension. It is good for the customer to check the end date of the contract and, if necessary, sign a new contract well in advance of the end of the fixed-term contract.

Special situations

There are also special situations where the termination terms of the electricity contract may differ from the usual terms. These situations can be, for example:

  1. Moving: When moving, the customer can usually terminate the electricity contract without a notice period, but the electricity company must be notified of this in advance.
  2. In case of death: In the event of the customer’s death, the electricity contract can be terminated immediately, as long as the electricity company is notified.
  3. Force majeure: If the fulfillment of the contract is prevented due to force majeure, the contract can be terminated without notice.

It is important to familiarize yourself with the terms of your electricity contract carefully and, if necessary, contact the electricity company if there are questions or ambiguities related to the termination.
