What are the goals of sustainable development?
The Sustainable Development Goals are global goals set by the United Nations (UN), which aim to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life around the world. These goals are also known as Agenda 2030 and were adopted in 2015. There are 17 goals in total and they cover a wide range of social, economic and environmental issues. These goals are discussed in more detail below.
1. No poverty
The goal is to eliminate extreme poverty in all its forms throughout the world by 2030. This also includes reducing poverty on a relative level.
2. No hunger
The goal is to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
3. Health and well-being
The goal is to guarantee a healthy life and well-being for people of all ages.
4. Good education
The aim is to guarantee open, equal and high-quality education for all, as well as lifelong learning opportunities.
5. Gender equality
The goal is to achieve gender equality and strengthen the position of women and girls.
6. Clean water and sanitation
The goal is to ensure water supply and sustainable use and sanitation for everyone.
7. Cheap and clean energy
The goal is to ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for everyone.
8. Decent work and economic growth
The goal is to promote sustainable, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
9. Sustainable industry, innovations and infrastructure
The goal is to build sustainable infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and support innovation.
10. Reducing inequality
The goal is to reduce inequality within and between countries.
11. Sustainable cities and communities
The goal is to make cities and population centers inclusive, safe, sustainable and resilient.
12. Responsible consumption and production
The goal is to ensure sustainable consumption and production methods.
13. Climate actions
The goal is to take urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects.
14. Underwater life
The goal is to protect and sustainably use the seas and the resources offered by the seas.
15. Life on Earth
The goal is to protect, restore and promote sustainable use in the Earth’s ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, fight desertification, stop and reverse soil depletion and stop the loss of biodiversity.
16. Peace, justice and good governance
The goal is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies to achieve sustainable development, provide justice for all and build efficient, responsible and inclusive institutions at all levels.
17. Cooperation and partnership
The goal is to strengthen the means and revive the global partnership to promote sustainable development.
