How many days are there in a year?

There are usually 365 days in a year, but this is not the whole truth. Let’s look at it a little more closely.

Normal year

A normal year, also known as a common year, contains 365 days. This is based on the fact that the Earth orbits the Sun in approximately 365.24 days. Since we cannot use fractions of days in our calendar, we have ended up using 365 days as a standard year.

Leap year

A leap year is a special year that includes one extra day, i.e. a total of 366 days. This extra day is added to February, making February 29 days instead of the normal 28 days. A leap year repeats every four years, but there are exceptions to this rule as well.

Leap year rules

The following rules are used to determine the leap year:

  • A year is a leap year if it is divisible by four.
  • However, if a year is divisible by 100, it is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400.

For example, the year 2000 was a leap year because it is divisible by 400, but the year 1900 was not a leap year, even though it is divisible by 100, because it is not divisible by 400.

Summary

In summary, there are usually 365 days in a year, but in leap years there are 366 days. Leap years repeat every four years, but for centuries there are special rules that affect the determination of a leap year.
