Is Morocco an EU country?
Morocco is not a member of the European Union (EU). Morocco is located in North Africa and is an independent country that does not belong to the European Union. Although Morocco is geographically close to Europe and has close economic and political relations with many EU countries, it is not part of the EU.
Cooperation between Morocco and the EU
However, Morocco and the EU have developed a strong partnership over the years. This cooperation covers several different areas, such as trade, security, immigration and development aid. Morocco is one of the EU’s most important partners in the Mediterranean region.
Association Agreement
Morocco and the EU signed an association agreement in 1996, which entered into force in 2000. This agreement has laid the foundation for close economic and political relations. The association agreement covers, among other things, the following areas:
- Trade: The agreement has removed several customs fees and other trade barriers, which has facilitated the exchange of goods and services between Morocco and the EU.
- Political dialogue: The agreement has created a framework for regular political dialogue, which covers, among other things, human rights, the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
- Cooperation: The agreement promotes cooperation in several different fields, such as environmental protection, research and education.
European neighborhood policy
Morocco is also part of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), which is the EU’s strategy to strengthen relations with its neighboring countries. Within the framework of the ENP, Morocco has received significant financial support and technical assistance from the EU. This cooperation has helped Morocco implement important economic and political reforms.
Morocco’s position as a country outside the EU
Although Morocco is not an EU country, its close relations with the EU have brought many advantages to both parties. Morocco benefits from the proximity of EU markets and financial support, while the EU benefits from Morocco’s strategic location and cooperation in many different fields.
