Is joining the strike mandatory?

Joining a strike is not mandatory in Finland. An employee has the right to participate in a strike, but at the same time also has the right not to participate in it. A strike is a means of industrial action by employees, which aims to influence working conditions or other issues in working life. A strike is a permitted and protected activity to protect workers’ rights.

The employer does not have the right to punish an employee for participating in a strike, and an employee cannot lose his job due to participating in a strike. However, the employee must notify the employer in advance if he intends to participate in the strike.

It is important to remember that there are always risks associated with striking, such as unpaid wages and possible conflicts with the employer. Before participating in a strike, you should carefully consider the situation and possible consequences.
