Is Azerbaijan an EU country?

Azerbaijan is not a member of the European Union (EU). The European Union currently consists of 27 member states, and Azerbaijan is not one of these countries. Located in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan is an independent state that has been independent since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Azerbaijan-EU relations

Although Azerbaijan is not a member of the EU, it nevertheless has various forms of cooperation and agreements with the EU. These relations are developed through, among other things, the Eastern Partnership, which is a cooperation program between the EU and six countries in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus. The Eastern Partnership aims to strengthen political and economic relations between the EU and these countries.

Eastern Partnership

The Eastern Partnership was launched in 2009 and includes the following countries:

  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belarus
  • Georgia
  • Moldova
  • Ukraine

The aim of this partnership is to promote democracy, the rule of law, human rights and a market economy in these countries. In addition, it aims to improve economic integration and political cooperation between the EU and partner countries.

Cooperation areas

Cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU covers several different areas, such as:

  1. Energy: Azerbaijan is a major energy producer and supplies oil and gas to Europe. The EU and Azerbaijan cooperate to improve energy security and energy efficiency.
  2. Trade: The EU is one of Azerbaijan’s most important trade partners. The aim is to strengthen and diversify trade relations.
  3. Mobility and connections between people: the EU supports the mobility and educational opportunities of Azerbaijani citizens in Europe.
  4. Environment and climate change: The EU and Azerbaijan cooperate in the field of environmental protection and combating climate change.
